DIETIES
man it's been awhile.
been really busy and the stuff I have been working on, one being a new book I can't really share yet much too early.
some friends have set up a cool blog design a diety
here's my contribution so far
the All
"the all" : he is so huge he can only be partially captured and with great effort to do just that. The image was taken with what is currently the most powerful telescope in existence, shielded by the darkest and largest sunglass lens ever created in order to block out the incredible light emitted from the eyes, which when opened fully have been known to completely fry several galaxies. Within the tendrils of The All, many a
star has lost its way.

Boney Thought

this was a longer drink and draw sketch , there should be some red marker in there which was bleed thru from the other pages, i accidently scanned my other sketches which had color in black and white so i'll put them up later
went to new york city for the first time over memorial day weekend that was a lot of fun Sushi of Gari was probably my most favorite meal, lombardi's pizza was pretty damn tasty ,pretty let down with cafe habana...gotta go back for more in depth food trip soho was a great area. Oh and thanks to my girlfriend I was able to see a Mazzuchelli exhibit with a lot of Batman Year one original art as well as Daredevil and Rubber blankets stuff, that was inspiring to see those pretty year one pages....ah they were so pretty.

Colors

so I've finally got some free time meaning i'm not trying to finish a comic or extra storyboards. But that free time won't last long as I've been wanting to get some new orginial graphic novels underway for awhile, the first being an adventure story. So as I try and find my full color voice I've done a few more finished color pieces. Right now as much as I love to ink and the line when I color I seem to want to obliterate all lines and work with value and lighting, but completely in color. It definitely depends on the type of story but right now i'm not sure exactly How I can get all the inks and colors to synchronize, maybe I will incorporate special black and white title pages or moments within the story that are inked? And the rest linework with full color doing most of the heavy lifting. We'll see. Here's a hulk spidey and the owlen man from Mora.

Tales of TMNT 59

much of my absence is attributable to trying to get this book done which had a very tight deadline mainly because I squandered the lead time I had on the previous book, but I have yet to miss a deadline, though it totally kills most all my nights and weekends.
this book is available for pre-order in the april diamond "Previews" catalog and is out in june can't believe that's next month!!

TMNT commission

I have been working on this commission little by little over a couple months because of my crazy schedule but finally finished.
tales of tmnt 56 comes out soon
also tales 59 will be available for pre-order in a week or so, so if your interested in picking it up please think about pre-ordering since very few comic shops will actually order tmnt books unless someone specifically does so. barnes and noble had pre-orders for 56 so I assume they will do the same for 59 so you could pre-order online

My First Animation
I had so much fun doing this for the titmouse studio 5 sec animation day. I REALLY love animation , and seeing the drawings come to life. I used pencil homebrew, then timed it in flash and my multi-disciplined talented buddy Keith Yan http://www.flickr.com/photos/shadowedlab/ put the sound together

Rider

i had this simple idea after seeing this motor cyclist with a silver helmet
the look is a very typical Japanese hero type of thing but I was surprised when I watched red baron, an old Japanese giant robot show (live action) to see the villains were almost identical to this black suits, silver gloves and boots but they had a cooler more alien robot head

Nibs Pens and The Big Brush

this weekend while battling a cold just strong enough to keep me fairly foggy headed i went to the graphaids 40% off everything sale and spent too much money. those awesome nibs looked so cool with the old timey graphics I bought a whole bunch, for a dollar a box it was a steal, and they are awesome. Craig Nelson one of my painting instructors in school would always insist on using brushes you think are too big for the job, i've been using that approach with my inking and i like it.the big piece was my scratch pad underneath my pages that ink, usually testing the line of the different nibs as well as wiping off excess ink before brushing. I tested out a fairly big Japanese calligraphy brush and this was the resulting sketch...painting with ink is very fun

Life Drawing

Titmouse my current workplace had a great workshop last night , Sylvain directed it. We had several short poses where we focused on continuous line never lifting the the pen(i was using pen) and finding where lines meet on the body for instance the arm meeting the torso. I hadn't done it in a while but it was a lot of fun from bottom to top is the general progression of the night the title of each piece indicates time and excercise

Forest Walker
it doesn't seem that original but i still like the idea, it was a character in a dream she had a white head with branches like bleached driftwood and a cloak like rolled soil with flowers and exotic plants covering the cloak and giving the character it's color and texturei'm gonna try and paint it..

Really trying to force myself to paint more and treat it just like I approach sketching. Get a lot of small thoughts and ideas out down quickly and work out some themes and techniques. these are acrylic on cardboard. Just bought some holbein acylic polymer gaouche which i'm interested in using trying to achieve a more lush painterly look without ever using oils haha

New Pens and Paper

so i'm working on a really cool project doing boards, dave johnson is the character/concept artist doing some pretty damn sweet designs, sylvan who is a film board artist is art director. i'm really getting to do some fun stuff on boards..anyhow i've been getting some good inking tips from dave this paper and these very cool brush pens, japanese of course, are really nice. the ben can do some really nice dry brush especially on textured paper and stay sharp, i cant slather on the ink like my aquash pens but they will definitely work well together
Pieces of History

I was gonna talk primarily about these amazing maurice noble pieces I just bought , which are very important parts of animation history. These pieces some of which are from the Chuck Jones / Michael Maltese/ Maurice Noble masterpiece "boyhood daze", but how could I not mention the Historic election of nov 4 of which my girlfriend smartly bought a copy of the LA times ,most of the other papers thoroughly snatched up. I've never seen so much positivity and uplifted folks that seem to truly feel proud and connected to their country, possibly for the first time...I've came across some of the most amazing conversations in the past few days and they have al put a smile on my face.
Back to Noble. My love and adoration for the Chuck Jones masterpieces really made me take notice of the brillaint acompanyment that Noble was to Chuck. Chucks work just did not have the same impact without Noble's layouts. Together they are pure magic! Their work remains one of the most influential works of art on me to this day. Also just picked up the Noel Sickles scortchy smith book which showcase the comic strip and sickles simply amazing illustration work. You can see his influence on the amazing alex toth. Also picked up Chipp Kidd's Batmanga! the paperback has one of the coolest covers ever! what a great book.

New Weapons New Scale

So after seeing one of my favorite artists new work jpleon (johnpaulleon.com) I was inspired, and got some good tips about the nibs he uses. So I am once again trying to see if I can implement quill, nibs and brush together. Falling Oaks yes that's new stuff in that picture will be my new ink testing ground. It also is a really fun exercise in storytelling and coloring, I'll talk more about that later. Anyhow I've loaded up on inks and supplies I'm working on a new technique for the next tales of tmnt(56) and as you can see I'm trying to get a new sense of scale and physique between the different turtles. Hopefully you can see the little nuances in in muscle definition and size as I really thought about their weapons and combat methods and personalities. Can you tell who is who? If your a turtle fan and participate in turtle communities feel free to post it where appropriate, i'd like to see if turtle fans in the know can guess which turtle is which. and i kind of like the samurai sash en lieu of the belt.
p.s. that deleter pen holder is the ultimate! I just figured out it can hold any and all nibs as some of the other simple wooden and plastic holder are specific to one sizeand it has a more ergonomic grip to boot!

The Dark Knight
Thanks to some friends at WB animation I was able to see the employee screening of the Dark Knight Tuesday. I have followed this movie for it's entire gestation period and my expectations and hopes were sky, having loved Nolan's interpretation and imagination applied to Batman's legendary mythos. After seeing this film I felt like it was the first time in far too long to finally see a great film. If nothing else this film has made my turn and reflect with even greater scrutiny what passes for a movie these past years. This film is on a whole other level. To simply compare this to other super-hero movies or any other comic films is a huge disservice, but if you must there's absolutley no question which one stands head and shoulders above the rest. The movie reached a level of intensity and emotion that seemed so foreign, I can scarcely remember having those feelings in a movie theater. To me this is the definitive Batman, obviously owing a great deal to the greatest of batman tales, Miller responsible for most, but here I see the Batman and now the joker and the gotham and the world that lied just beyond the comic and ,possibly because the safer nature of it, the animation's grasp. It's an amazing feat the Nolan's and everyone involved have achieved, a brilliant work that shows the depth and maturity fantasy is capable of. The next crop of comic films, action dramas, crime stories, hell even horror are really gonna have to step up their game. This is how it's done folks.
Oh yeah, you've never seen anything like Heath Ledgers Joker, what a performance!

Hulk Smash mediocre remake!
i know people are super touchy about super hero movies, almost as bad as game console loyalty but i just feel like talking about them for a moment. my super hero movie taste is a bit specific and I tend to not like ones many seem to enjoy. my biggest issue with super-hero movies is lack of cinematography and any sort of aesthetic. for that very reason and some others the original superman and batman begins are pretty much the only films I have any warm feelings for. The spiderman movies make me sick to my stomach. iron man was entertaining but felt cheap, predictable, and claustrophobic... set wise...one more scene in starks basement and i would have shot myself. and iron man itself doesn't even have any character. whatever, anyhow this new hulk was surprisingly much uglier cg then the first and hulk did way less interesting stuff then he did in the first movie... it's sad. What you saw in the commercials is exactly what you got, no surprises no curveballs. It's almost how i felt when i saw superman...here you have a character physically capable of anything and you come up with the most hum drum action scenes. Hancock had better action then either of those. marvel would have been better served redoing daredevil, which of course i didn't even bother to watch...ben affleck! give me a break. what you guys look for in super hero movies? I'm perfectly willing to let films stray from the source material if they understand the essence and approach with some imagination, that's what i look for, that and a good director of photography.

Metal Gear Solid 4
I think we should all just refer to Metal Gear Solid 4 as an experience...an amazing experience. It's too much to get into and I don't want to spoil one thing about it, but it has raised the bar an all forms of entertainment. It has achieved such a high level of artistry and storytelling that I can't imagine not being influenced or inspired by it for years to come. I'm still playing through and eager for a second helping. If at all possible try and experience this masterpiece. Depending on your gaming and or Metal Gear familiarity there may be a bit of a learning curve, but this game is much more accessible then the previous ones and there's many ways too approach the gameplay and controls. It is pure awesomeness.

All in Your Head 24 hour comic

I did this awhile ago but I'm really proud of it the story really worked out well, it's 24 pages i believe and all done working 24 hours straight as part of 24 hour comic day, I may have doodled a rough layout or two but for the most part i just drew the story panel by panel it was so much fun. the first page i started refitting to actual comic format and that's why the lettering is typed. I want to definitely polish this up and publish it as a one shot

There deosnt seem to be a way to reply directly to comments so you know I've replied...is there? These are from my hiatusified strip Welcome to Falling Oaks. http://fallingoaks.com I really had fun doing it and it was a great way to learn and experiment with storytelling, mood pacing color lighting and stuff I hope to bring into my own graphic novels later on. Very soon I'm gonna sit down and write some new episodes, i think it has a very interesting overall story. I'll talk about it more but i think theres some info about it out there at least there used to be

Wurmler of the West

this was a character for a short story i did for flight 3
I was really dissappointed in how little of the life in these sketches made it into the final I drew my own character SO off model! I'm gonna do a new story for him someday
he's a young warrior with a rare sword called the dragons tongue which is forked like a reptile tongue and is very flexible and becomes hot from constant motion, hence the dragon aspect of it. the worm creature is actually a wurm type legless dragon that wurmler (the little boy) fights with doing acrobatic things

rat cook
I'm increasingly dissappointed with the concepts of Pixar. From the upcoming movie list it doesn't look like I'll need to see anything from them for awhile. Ive proclaimed my distaste for the rat cook concept and look for awhile but I finally sat and watched it. I looked at it from the point of how well did they make the concept and story they chose work. How do they engage the audience and get them into the story. Being a cook myself I actually found very little interesting in the cooking elements. But anyway the whole opening was very slow and throughout the movie I found many elements hard to believe, I thought they betrayed the characters they set up and often there were odd choices simply moving story from point A to B. The old woman shooting the hell out of her home was neither amusing or believable. The strange choice to make the rats need for food and natural instinct for survival into petty theft was really stupid. The whole film was really unamusing, and full of cartoony cliche antics and slapstick. The pseudo french ,characters most of which were merely providing background noise or awaiting to serve their brief plot point. Sorry these thoughts are everywhere I'm clumsily iPhone typing. The characters seemed merely for moving the plot along. The strange relationship with the female character that becomes even more obscurely vague ,after she and the main human character kiss, to the point of a nearly non existant relationship. I found it odd that even though the rat was the star cook, the other chefs were absolutely useless to the point of
not even learning any of the rats recipes, what were the others doing all those nights of cooking the rats recipes?!. I also didnt understand the chefs simply walking out once they find out a rat is the cook, was there no friendship amongst them? At the very least one of them would be willing to stick with it given the restaurants new found success. Anyway even the girlfriend walks out until she sees the ubiquitous "anyone can cook" a theme bludgeoned across the audiences head. Once again I felt the chefs reactions served the plot as opposed to being natural to the characters and scenario. The little spats between the rat and human were equally implausible. The rat mad after a fight with the unappreciative human, sends the rat family to " steal" food. They get caught by the human who owes all his success to this rat and instead of being level headed and appreciative of the rat that's brought him everything, he calls them all thieves and tells them to get out even though this is the most important night for the restaurant. There's plenty more that bothered me mostly along the same lines of thinly veiled plot devices unnatural character reactions and long unamusing cartoony monologues but typing on this phone is slow
I know story is claimed to be pixars focus but its sort of taken a back seat to character animation and overly rendered environments
p.s. Why does the garbage boy with apparently no inclination to cook proceed to go and ruin a soup right off the bat?! And a soup that induces vomiting isn't gonna become exquisite with a little bay leaf and cream

Got my hands on Street Fighter 4
I just got back from Tokyo and was fortunate enough to be there for the beta testing they were doing at the various plaza capcom's around tokyo. I've been on the fence about so much of the look, it seems like they could get the 3d to look more like their drawings but aside from some really gross up close 3d animation, namely guile, the games whole package is pretty impressive in motion with full effects etc. The game is fun to just watch. I was able to get on three times, if and when you lose, you are only playing human opponents, you lined back up. I tried ryu once and blanka twice and on my final trip with blanka I actually had 3 wins, I was not able to pull off any of the super moves on joystick quite yet so I just played all straight up with their regular moves which was more than effective. I have to say the game feels awesome! I was actually not so thrilled about all the street fighter 2 /turbo gameplay but I actually found it to have more of the nice meaty feel of third strike. You really feel the hits and you feel like your characters are connecting/hitting your opponent, which what was usually lacking to me in most 3d fighters. The speed is perfect, pretty fast without being crazy. The attack and character animations in general really bring it all to life. The game just feels immediately addictictive, now I absolutely can't wait for this game to come out, to play online, to see what else they have in store for the game.

totally unrelated I've got bioshock for my pc (laptop) and metroid prime 3 for wii, suffice it to say I'm not having too much fun with bioshock I find it pretty redundant and not even very interesting visually...i was hoping bioshock would be more of an adventure like res evil or just have more stuff happening. metroid on the other hand is awesome the art design is amazing the environments are stunning and its totally immersive, it's already like a great roller coaster ride I don't know why other fps can't incorporate the variety of gameplay like metroid or res evil

2k7 WHAT'S UP
How have I been entertaining myself this holiday? Nintendo Wii for sure, bowling, and The big "Z" Zelda, twilight princess.
Lately I've been listening to Joanna Newsom's awesome new album "Ys" absolutely fantastic! It's like Newsom's "Kid A"
White Magic's new album is awesome and well pure magic. I'm also listening to new Yola Tengo and a Twilight zone soundtrack. Jerry Goldsmith is pretty damn amazing sometimes listen to the the nervous man in the 4 dollar room, the last 2 minutes are so sweet!
I'm working on a custom figure of Quaffine from MOra and it looks amazing. Her new outfit will definitely be in the new works...
happy new years folks

Mora and Me
My first blog. I don't have much time to spill my guts, cuz I'm desperatley trying to get this one-shot I'm working plotted out. Anyway pretty excited about my first book MORA which comes out this Wednesday, Feb 2nd. I'm gonna go to Hide-Ho to sign a few books, and will have something at Meltdown and Golden Apple this is all in L.A. of course. Anyway I had a lot of fun last weekend back in SF at the Image Isotope party. James and crew are awesome. It was really cool to be there and watch the very first people in the country pick up the book and get immediate feedback. I'm very busy getting the third book written right now and am really excited about it. Here's my website if you want to see my work http://dogmeatsausage.com feel free to email me. I'm certain most of these posts will have to do with Mora because my life is boring, hers isn't. ;)
